Four Concordians were awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Youth Award for Community Services on Saturday, May 1: Michael Abravanel, Soraya Linge, Alex Oster and Maegan Putnam.
The Lieutenant Governor’s Youth Medal is given to out to those who have demonstrated self-sacrifice and the ability to surpass themselves through tangible commitment within their school or community.
A little bit about the winners:
Alexander Thomas Oster lives his commitment to sustainability and motivates others. He is the Concordia Student Union VP for Sustainability, a high school soccer coach, and a representative to and volunteer with Powershift 2009: a youth conference on sustainable development and climate change. He spent a semester at the Indian Institute of Technology in Chenai and has received a Scouting and Pathfinder Citizenship Award.
Soraya Linge was dedicated to improving life in Haïti even before the earthquake as a volunteer to causes of illiteracy and the elderly. She volunteered with Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal, taught literacy courses for children and the disadvantaged with the Fondation Québec-Haïti pour la scolarisation universelle de qualité and was a member of the Institute for Industrial Engineers and student rep with l’Association des ingénieurs et scientifiques haïtano-québécois. She also organized fund-raisers and dedicated numerous hours to helping support Haïtian students affected by the tragedy.
Eva Maegan Putnam was selected to be Valedictorian for the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, has a passion for the environment, international development and the well-being of others and volunteers with Engineers without Borders in Ghana.
Michael Abravanel is dedicated to the promotion of peace, spiritual awareness and understanding. He is the founding member of Spiritual Awareness Fellowship Worldwide, is a published author on these issues and a leader of the Interfaith Ambassador Program at the Multi-faith Chaplaincy. He is involved in sports and student governance and was winner of the 2005-06 Canadian Millennium Scholarship.
