Concordia bursary named for late Gazette reporter

As a tribute to a friend and colleague, the Gazette and its employees have established a bursary fund in memory of Mike King, a well-loved reporter who died June 13. He worked for the paper for 22 years, covering city, business and general assignment stories. The bursary in his name is to be awarded annually to an undergraduate at the Concordia School of Journalism.

Spring Convocation

Spring Convocation, June 21 - 23, 2010

Concordia University will hold its spring convocation ceremonies on June 21, 22 and 23. More than 4,800 students will receive their degrees during the convocation ceremonies at Salle Wilfrid Pelletier in Place des Arts (175 Ste.Catherine Street West). Concordia will also bestow seven honorary doctorates during the convocation ceremonies.

Special Concordia Journal supplement: Great Grads 2010

The latest issue of the Concordia Journal focuses on this year’s Great Grads. We learn about Science College grads Mylène Juneau, Elyse Schmidt and Lima Kayello, who used their project-based program to fuel their futures. Athlete and artist Fanny Berthiaume earned Concordia’s first Provost Medal, while friends Gregory Johannson and Alex Oster are working hard to change the world for the better. Christine Jones

Concordia alumna wins Tony Award

Concordia alumna Christine Jones has won a Tony Award for ‘Best Scenic Design of a Musical’ for her work on the punk rock opera American Idiot. The announcement was made at the Tony Awards on June 13, 2010. Jones graduated from Concordia with a BFA in Design for the Theatre.

Seven honorary doctorates for spring convocation 2010

Concordia University to present Honorary Degrees to seven distinguished individuals

Concordia University will bestow seven honorary doctorates during spring convocation ceremonies to be held June 21-23 in Salle Wilfrid Pelletier at Place des Arts (175 Ste. Catherine Street West). The distinguished recipients are: Robert Charlebois, Eleanor Wachtel, Richard Pound, Laurent Beaudoin, The Right Honourable Jean Chrétien, Julie Payette and R. Murray Schafer.

BAnQ and Concordia sign partnership agreement

Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) and Concordia University today finalized a partnership agreement that provides the official framework for future collaborative projects to be created by the two institutions. The agreement was signed at the Grande Bibliothèque by Guy Berthiaume, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of BAnQ, and Judith Woodsworth, President and Vice-Chancellor of Concordia University.

Aydin Matlabi

Aydin Matlabi wins the Dick and Gretchen Evans Prize for Photography

Aydin Matlabi, current student in the MFA in Studio Arts program, was awarded the Dick and Gretchen Evans Prize for Photography, a one-time $6,000 cash prize. Matlabi, selected by a jury of six Concordia photography professors, is in his final year of the program and has already established a career in photography.

Wearable Art

Wearable Absence: New Fine Arts research unveiled

As part of the 2010 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, two teams of researchers led by Professor Barbara Layne of Concordia and Professor Janis Jefferies at Goldsmiths, University of London, U.K., have brought research in intelligent textiles to a new level. The research teams have developed a highly sophisticated concept of interactive clothing whereby the body’s physical and emotional state triggers the transfer of personalized memory back to the wearer.

Congress 2010

Largest Congress ever: Concordia welcomes nearly 9,000 delegates

It’s official: Concordia hosted the largest Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences in the conference’s 79-year history. From May 28 to June 4, 8,880 delegates from 70 academic associations descended upon the university. “We’re collecting feedback from delegates who were blown away by the volunteers, the quality of the facilities, the extra programming,” said Congress 2010 Academic Convenor Ronald Rudin, who now returns to his duties as History Professor. “I think that everyone feels it was an incredible experience on so many levels.”
