Québec’s Health minister, Philippe Couillard, recently tabled new legislation to ban smoking in all enclosed public spaces, effective January 1, 2006. In addition, Bill 112 will make it illegal to smoke outside, on any school property (this includes universities) within nine metres of a building entrance.
In response to the concerns expressed by many non-smoking Concordians, the University has taken the following steps, which you will see in the very near future. There will be yellow lines painted and sandwich boards placed outside of University entrances, indicating these non-smoking boundaries. While Concordia Security will enforce the non-smoking legislation, we ask your kind cooperation in protecting the rights of all Concordians to breathe easier, by respecting these boundaries.
