R4 Concordia is thrilled to announce Worms and the City, the official launch of the Sir George Williams R4 Compost.
Worms and the City celebrates the new composting facilities located in the rooftop greenhouse of Concordia’s downtown campus.
These installations have a composting capacity of twenty four metric tons of organic matter per year, with the ability to produce seven tons of fertile soil for projects in the greenhouse, as well as for the maintenance of the university’s grounds.
Furthermore, the project’s environmental benefits are underlined through the forty-eight ton reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in addition to other atmospheric and aquatic pollutants.
R4 Concordia — Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle — is a working group of Sustainable Concordia. In the realm of sustainability, which promotes social equity, ecological integrity and economic prosperity, R4 concentrates its efforts on environmental initiatives while integrating social and economic components in its decision making process.
The greenhouse project was initiated by Sustainable Concordia in 2003 and, in partnership with the Geography, Planning and Environment department, aims to make use of the rooftop greenhouse as an all-organic space, geared towards education and research, sustainable horticulture, and community-building.
