Concordia’s Communications Department is pleased to announce the upcoming visit of Professor Michael A. Geist, Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law, University of Ottawa.
When: Monday, September 15, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Where: EV.11.705 (Hexagram Resource Room), Engineering, Computer Science & Visual Arts Complex, 1515 St. Catherine, W.
Join us to hear Michael Geist, founder of Fair Copyright for Canada (now at 90,000 members) discuss the controversial Bill C-61, Canada’s Copyright ‘Reform’ Bill.
The Bill has catapulted widespread and contentious debate amongst politicians, librarians, educators, creative artists, and citizens because of its strong anti-circumvention provisions and restrictions on consumer and education exceptions.
While the newly-called federal election on October 14 essentially ‘kills’ the bill, copyright reform is very much alive and will be on the agenda for the next government.
It’s an opportune time to educate ourselves about copyright issues, pressure our candidates, and push for widespread public consultation to ensure that the public interest is respected in new copyright reforms.
This public talk is sponsored by the Canadian Journal of Communication, Communication Studies Department, Mobile Media Lab, CINERG (Concordia Interactive Narrative Experimentation and Research Group), and Hexagram.
The talk will also be podcast on the CJC website. For more information about Michael Geist, visit his website.
