Retirement of Sue Magor

Vice-President Services Michael Di Grappa announces the retirement of Sue Magor after a twenty-nine-year career at the university as Director, Environmental Health & Safety.

“Sue has been a pioneer at Concordia and a leader in the field of environmental health and safety,” said Vice-President Di Grappa. “She not only trained a generation of professionals but inspired countless students to be active in the field of the environment and to be a part of Concordia’s sustainability initiatives. Concordia owes a deep debt of gratitude to Sue for her contribution to our university.”

A registered nurse, Sue Magor was Assistant Director, Health Services and Staff Nurse at Concordia’s Health Services from 1975 to 1980. In 1980, she became Director, Environmental Health & Safety and established the Environmental Health & Safety Office. She was also a part-time faculty member in the Department of Management at JMSB from 1991 to 2007.

As Director of the Environmental Health & Safety Office, she was responsible for the development and evaluation of a comprehensive environmental health and safety program encompassing all university activities and facilities and meeting the unique health and safety concerns of the academic, research and service areas of the institution.

A pioneer in health and safety management in Quebec universities, Sue Magor established the first university safety office in the province in 1980 and worked with the Quebec Government on the application and management of the newly promulgated provincial health and safety act in an academic environment. Sue has also served as an advisor to the Canadian Centre of Occupational Health and Safety in the development of an interactive training program on workplace violence and is a regular presenter at conferences and symposia relating to occupational health and safety both in Canada and the USA. A recipient of the National Safety Council’s Distinguished Service to Safety Award in the year 2000, she has served on both the Board of Delegates and the Board of Directors of the National Safety Council from 2003 to 2007.

Sue Magor officially retires on Dec. 31, 2009, but she will remain as an advisor to the Vice-President Services for special projects until May 31, 2010.

Michael Di Grappa joins the entire Concordia community in thanking Sue Magor for her hard work and dedication to Concordia.
