August 10, 2006 - Martin Singer has decided to step down as Provost of the university as of July 1, 2007. After an administrative leave, he will return to the History Department as a tenured professor and continue his work as one of Canada’s leading sinologists. He wishes to express his deep gratitude to the Concordia community for its support during his seven years as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science and three years as Provost.
“While this was not an easy decision, I have made it knowing that I accomplished many of the things that I set out to do as Provost and helped determine the academic direction of this institution for the next several years. I am particularly proud of the commitment to our academic plan, as set out in Moving Ahead, which has come from the various components of our community. I will leave the position knowing that I have helped set into motion Concordia’s next stage of development.”
“I have always been touched by the support that I received throughout my career at Concordia from colleagues and friends across the university. I want to thank the team of Deans who worked so closely with me. I also wish to express my gratitude to my Vice-Provosts, my professional staff and my office staff who worked so hard to develop and concretize our academic vision.”
“I also want to particularly thank Dr. Lajeunesse for his strong support. I have full confidence in the leadership of President Lajeunesse and it is my firm conviction that he and his team will guide Concordia’s development into a leading Canadian institution. They have my full backing.”
President Claude Lajeunesse thanked Dr. Singer not only for his contribution as Provost, but also for his tireless commitment to Concordia for 35 years.
“It is with regret that I accept Martin’s decision. As is his habit, Martin put his personal interests aside and agreed to stay on until next July to give us the time to begin the search for a new Provost. We need Martin’s active leadership and guidance as we move ahead with the ambitious program that he helped conceive.”
“Martin personifies the values of Concordia. He has made tremendous contributions to building this institution as a teacher, a colleague, a mentor, the Dean of our largest faculty and as Provost.”
“Martin is an inspiring leader and Concordia has been lucky to have so much of his time, energy and wisdom during a rich academic career. Concordia owes a deep debt of gratitude to Martin Singer.”
