Open meeting to introduce a candidate for the position of President and Vice-Chancellor

April 4, 2005—The Advisory Search Committee for a President and Vice-Chancellor is holding an open meeting of the Board of Governors and Senate to be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at 2 p.m., at a location to be confirmed at a later date. The Concordia community is invited to attend, but speaking privileges are limited to members of the Board of Governors and Senate. The purpose of this meeting is to introduce a candidate whom the Committee has selected for consideration for the position of President and Vice-Chancellor.

Candidate

The candidate is Dr. Claude Lajeunesse, President and Vice-Chancellor of Ryerson University since September 1995, whose second mandate is ending on July 31, 2005. From 1988 to 1995, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), and from 1984 to 1987, he was Director, Targeted Research for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Dr. Lajeunesse holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc., both in Nuclear Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He obtained his B.Sc.A in Engineering Physics from École Polytechnique, Université de Montréal. Dr. Lajeunesse has demonstrated depth and breadth in his professional and volunteer engagement. He is currently Vice-Chair of the Toronto East General Hospital Board, a member of the executive of the Ontario Heritage Foundation and Chair of the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Committee. He is also a director of TD Meloche Monnex and was recently appointed to the Board of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. Dr. Lajeunesse is the author of numerous publications. Comments to the Search Committee

The Search Committee invites comments from the community concerning the candidate. Please send your signed, or if by email, clearly identified, comments to the Secretary of the Search Committee, Danielle Tessier, in S-BC-319, by email at danielle@alcor.concordia.ca or fax at 848-8649. The submission deadline is noon, Wednesday, May 11, 2005.

The Search Committee’s reasoned recommendation will be presented for approval by the Board of Governors at its meeting of May 19, 2005.

Procedure

Mr. Alain Benedetti, Chair of the Board of Governors and Chair of the Advisory Search Committee, will chair the meeting. Mr. Benedetti will present Dr. Lajeunesse and the latter will be invited to make an opening statement of 20 minutes. A 30-minute question period will follow this presentation.

While all members of the University are welcome to attend, only members of the Board of Governors and Senate have speaking privileges during the meeting. They are invited to advance to the microphones and ask questions of the candidate. Only when everyone has had the opportunity to direct a question to the candidate will any individual be permitted to ask a second question.
