Elected Deputy Speaker of Senate: nominations period extended to May 7

Nominations for the position of Deputy Speaker of Senate have been extended. Nominations will now be accepted until 5 p.m., May 7, 2004

Notice: Call for Nominations

Elected Deputy Speaker of Senate

On November 28, 2003, Senate amended the Enabling Legislation for the Speaker of Senate to create the position of Deputy Speaker of Senate. The current Speaker of Senate is Dr. John O’Brien. Although Dr. O’Brien has not indicated his intention of stepping down in the immediate future, Senate Steering Committee is looking to ensure a smooth transition. Accordingly, Senate Steering Committee feels that it would be advisable that Senate elect a Deputy Speaker of Senate. This person will fill in for Dr. O’Brien when the latter is absent, with a view of this person being proposed by Senate Steering Committee when Dr. O’Brien does decide to step down.

Please note that Senate Steering Committee is not submitting a nomination for Deputy Speaker of Senate. As provided for in the Enabling Legislation, Senate Steering Committee is seeking nominations for the position of Deputy Speaker from the community-at-large in accordance with the provisions set out below. The Deputy Speaker is elected for a one-year term, which is renewable upon re-appointment by Senate. The Deputy Speaker shall replace the Speaker when the latter is unable to be present at Senate meetings, in which case he/she will be called upon to move the debate along, keep a speaker’s list, know the rules of Senate and University rules that affect Senate, maintain parliamentary order, and remain neutral and not enter into the substance of the debate. This is not a paid position.

1. All internal part-time and full-time members of the Concordia University community including students, faculty, staff and administrative personnel are eligible to make nominations.

2. All internal part-time and full-time members of the Concordia University community who have served on Senate in a previous or current year as Regular Voting or Regular Non-Voting Members, or as Permanent Observers, including current and former students, faculty, staff and administrators, are eligible to be nominated.

3. Nominations must be signed by five (5) members of the internal University community, one of whom must be a current voting member of Senate (see list on reverse), and be signed by the nominee indicating her or his acceptance of the nomination and willingness to serve if elected.

4. Nominations must be received by the Director, Board and Senate Administration, (Room BC 320, Bishop Court, SGW Campus), no later than 5:00 pm, on April 15, 2004.

5. Nominations will be presented and voted on at the Senate meeting of March 19, 2004 in accordance with the voting procedures contained in the Enabling Legislation, as amended on November 28, 2003.
